KRISO-KISTI-KIER Sign MOU for Digital Twin Platform Development▶ Leading development of virtual testing and demonstration concepts through construction of a digital twin platform for floating ocean wind power □ Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean engineering (President Booki Kim, hereinafter KRISO) has signed an MOU with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (President Jae-soo, Kim, hereinafter KISTI) and Korea Institute of Energy Research (President Jong-nam Kim, hereinafter KIER) for the development of a digital twin platform for the virtual testing and demonstration of floating ocean wind power concepts on the 12th at the KISTI International Conference Room. □ The three institutions agreed to establish an active partnership for the preemptive development of a digital twin platform for floating ocean wind power and virtually demonstrated concepts utilizing the digital twin technology to achieve the early commercialization of floating ocean wind power, a technology of great potential value. □ Digital twin technology involves the reproduction of real objects as virtual models in a digital environment, to simulate situations that could occur in the real world, using the results to analyze and predict a wide range of situations. □ This is the first attempt to apply digital twin-based virtual testing and demonstration in the field of ocean wind power. The project will utilize the computing capabilities of KISTI’s national supercomputer no. 5, Nurion, to analyze the highly precise simulation models, putting designs through trial and error at the demonstration phase and testing stability in poor weather conditions in a digital environment. □ The three institutions will jointly: ▲ develop a digital twin platform for floating ocean wave power simulations and virtual demonstration, ▲ support an optimized environment for supercomputing-based simulation and digital twin operation, and ▲ utilize key research infrastructure between the institutions and pursue technology commercialization for this R&D project. □ As Korea’s leading research institute for ships and ocean engineering, KRISO has demonstrated technological leadership in floating body and mooring system dynamics, and in structure and fatigue analyses. Notably, it has successfully developed advanced wave power systems technology using a digital twin constructed based on operational data from the wave energy open sea test bed in Jeju. KISTI has expertise in data, networks, artificial intelligence and digital twin technology as the nation’s highest authority in science and technology information. KIER is a specialized research institution in the field of energy, with technological capabilities in fault diagnosis as well as blade and power transmission analyses of wind turbines based on real world operational data. □ With this MOU, the three institutions will construct a system for cooperation that will not only be utilized in the development of a digital twin platform for floating ocean wave power, but also preemptively implement virtually tested and demonstrated concepts to the field of wind energy research, which would be able to partially replace time-consuming and costly demonstrations. Synergy between the strengths of the three institutions would contribute to the early commercialization of a digital twin platform in the field of floating ocean wind power. □ KRISO President Dr. Booki Kim promised that “KRISO will actively utilize know-how in digital twin construction accumulated through wave energy system research to contribute to the construction and early commercialization of the digital twin platform for floating ocean wind power.”

KRISO launches South Korea's first fully-electric car ferry□ On March 4 (Friday), the launching ceremony for the first fully-electric car ferry in South Korea was held at the pier of the Sapjin Factory in Mokpo, Jeollanam-do. The ship launching was held to announce and celebrate the successful completion of the hull construction of the electric car ferry, which is one of the national R&D projects promoted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.□ The ceremony was attended by approximately 50 people including Booki Kim, the president of KRISO, Jong-shik Kim, the Mayor of Mokpo City, Woni Kim, Member of the National Assembly, Geum-joo Mun, Vice Governor for Administrative Affairs of Jeollanam-do, Chang-su Park, the president of the city assembly, Won-hee Han, the president of Mokpo Maritime University, Seongho Myoung, the president of Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute and In-suk Yoo, the CEO of YUIL Group. □ The event started with the opening ceremony, followed by the progress report on the launch, opening remarks from the distinguished guests, conferment of the launch certificate, ribbon-cutting ceremony, photography session, and a tour of the car ferry. The progress report was presented by Young-sik Kim, a senior researcher from the Alternative Fuels and Power System Research Division, who is in charge of the research project. The report included the significance of the development of the electric car ferry, the process leading up to its construction, and plans regarding its future development.□ In succession, Booki Kim, the president of KRISO, delivered a welcoming remark and said, “I expect the electric car ferry to play a major role in improving the atmospheric environment of the coastal area. We will do our best to usher in a new era along with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Jeollanam-do, and Mokpo city to concentrate the capabilities of participating organizations and companies towards creating a great synergy.”□ Hereafter, KRISO will continue to make effort towards completing various steps such as the follow-up process, conduction of test run, and the establishment of an integrated control system before the commercialization of the electric car ferry in 2024.

KRISO-KERI Partnership for Expansion of Eco-friendly Electric Ship Propulsion Technology▶ KRISO and KERI sign MOU for joint research in eco-friendly ship electric ship propulsion technology□ The Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean engineering (hereinafter KRISO, President Booki Kim) has partnered with the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI, President Sung-ho Myung) to develop electric propulsion technologies for eco-friendly ships. □ KRISO and KERI signed an MOU on the 4th at the KERI office to begin a joint research partnership for the development of electric propulsion technologies for eco-friendly ships. □ This MOU is significant as a partnership between leading government-funded research institutes in the fields of ship engineering and electrotechnology, joining the strengths and expertise of each to bring electrical ship propulsion technologies to the next level. □ The two institutions agreed on wide-reaching cooperation in eco-friendly electric propulsion technologies to contribute to the national goal of maritime carbon neutrality, with specific goals including the △ joint construction and utilization of eco-friendly maritime electric propulsion infrastructure, △ establishment of long-term roadmap for eco-friendly maritime electric propulsion technology, △ joint development and commercialization of core technologies to meet industrial needs (shipbuilding, shipping, apparatus), △ joint participation in and responses to global projects for the reduction of maritime greenhouse gases, and △ joint participation in national R&D projects, as well as mutual technological support. □ Eco-friendly ships currently being conceptualized within the maritime industry are propelled by carbon-free power sources such as ship batteries, fuel cells, or electrical generators using carbon-free fuel such as hydrogen or ammonia. These require the use of electrical propulsion systems including parts such as electric motors and switchboards. □ Thus, the two institutions plan to jointly establish a long-term roadmap towards the commercialization of electrical propulsion technology, including the construction of infrastructure to test and evaluate the performance and safety of eco-friendly electric propulsion technology. □ It is hoped that this MOU will lead to the implementation of a large scale national R&D project based on industrial demand, with the outcomes of research being used to further develop the nation’s maritime sector and boost global competitiveness. □ KRISO President Booki Kim promised KRISO’s“wholehearted efforts to develop eco-friendly electric propulsion technologies that not only deliver performance, but also reliability and safety,” adding, “we will do our best to bring eco-friendly ship technologies to commercial application as soon as possible through close cooperation between our two institutions.”

KRISO Senior Engineer Su-gil Cho Awarded KSDO Horatius Award▶ Awarded engineering prize for digital twinning technology for wave power system□ Senior Engineer Su-gil Cho of the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean engineering (hereinafter KRISO, President Booki Kim), Marine Renewable Energy Research Division, has been awarded the Horatius Technology Award. □ Senior Engineer Su-gil Cho was awarded the Horatius Technology Award, an award honoring outstanding contributions to design optimization in industry at the 2022 Korean Society for Design Optimization (KSDO) Conference held at Pusan National University from January 19th to 20th. □ The Korean Society for Design Optimization (KSDO) was established in 2014 under the aim of promoting academic and technological development in design optimization, and conducts regular academic conferences to examine research trends in relevant fields such as ▲additive manufacturing ▲aviation ▲electricity and ▲shipbuilding. KSDO also awards the Queen Dido Academic Award, Horatius Technology Award, Pidotech Rising Researcher Award and Outstanding Master’s and Doctoral Dissertation Awards each year. □ At the general meeting that followed the academic conference, Senior Engineer Su-gil Cho was awarded the Horatius Technology Award for his research on digital twinning for a wave power system. □ Digital twinning technology is used to create a virtual model of a real object in the digital space, where computer simulations of situations which may occur in the real world can be carried out to analyze and predict a wide range of scenarios. □ Senior Engineer Cho performed research applying digital twinning technology to a wave power system currently in real world operation. □ KRISO currently operates a real sea test bed for wave power in Yongsu-ri, Hangyeong-myeon, Jeju Island. This test bed is installed with an oscillating water column wave power system which uses waves to generate electricity. As the energy level fluctuates greatly in wave power, maintaining high efficiency is a key issue, along with the rapid diagnosis of core equipment failures. These are the key areas where Cho applied digital twinning technology to develop a more advanced wave power system. □ With this, failures of core equipment in the sea can be detected even from land, and new features such as real time integration, real time operation control, and automated control can be implemented. □ On receiving the Horatius Technology Award, Senior Engineer Cho said, “I hope to further develop the digital twin-based wave power system so that it may be commercialized as a small-scale automated power generation system in islands with poor access to electricity.”

KRISO Awarded Korea’s first AiP for Liquid Hydrogen Fuel Tank for Ships▶ Jointly developed by KRISO, POSCO, KSOE, and Hylium Industries▶ Building foundation for carbon neutrality through leadership in eco-friendly hydrogen powered ship technology□ Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean engineering (hereinafter KRISO, President Booki, Kim) has taken an important first step in the development of hydrogen powered eco-friendly ships. □ KRISO announced that it was awarded 2 AiPs from the Korean Register (Chairman Hyung-chul Lee) at the AiP* awarding ceremony for the ‘400kg 316L/316HN Liquid Hydrogen Fuel Tanks for Ships’ held at the POSCO Center Event Hall on the 12th. * AIP(Approval In Principle): Procedure to approve the principles of the liquid hydrogen fuel tank and associated technologies in development by verifying the validity of the concept and basic design in terms of safety and performance. □ The AiP awarding ceremony was attended by representatives from KRISO and its partners in the development of the technologies, POSCO Group, Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd. (KSOE), and Hylium Industries, Inc. □ The two AiPs were awarded for two different types of 400kg liquid hydrogen fuel tanks for ships, made from different kinds of stainless steel, 316L and 316HN. □ 316L is a type of stainless steel which is in current industrial use, which can be immediately applied to the production of liquid hydrogen storage containers which can withstand extreme cold up to –253 ℃. 316HN is a type of stainless steel newly developed by POSCO, engineered to minimize the problem of hydrogen embrittlement* occurring in ultra-low temperatures. * Hydrogen embrittlement: Phenomenon in which metal becomes breakable like glass with the diffusion of hydrogen into the metal. □ The liquid hydrogen fuel tanks also feature groundbreaking design features featuring cutting edge technologies. □ Firstly, a special breakwater panel prevents the degradation of fuel caused by liquid hydrogen phase change when the level of liquid hydrogen changes or when the ship experiences turbulent movements. The liquid hydrogen fuel tanks also have improved thermal insulation with a novel heat scattering support structure and vapor cooling barrier. □ These AiPs represent the recognition of the technologies by the most authoritative organization in Korea, as well as the securing of technological leadership in the field of hydrogen powered eco-friendly ships through cooperation between expert organizations in various fields, accelerating the development of carbon-free ships. □ KRISO and its partners went beyond the design stage, to produce a first prototype of the 400kg 316L liquid hydrogen fuel tank for ships. □ KRISO Senior Researcher Hyun-seok Kim, who leads the liquid hydrogen fuel tank project, shared future plans for the project, saying, “we plan to further develop the technology toward commercialization, with hydrogen powered eco-friendly ships using the liquid hydrogen fuel tank being tested in the new eco-friendly ship R&D facilities being constructed in Mokpo, Jeollanam-do Province.” □ KRISO President Booki Kim explained,“liquid hydrogen storage technology is a highly challenging field requiring the consideration of many factors,”adding, “this achievement was made possible thanks to cooperation between four organizations working towards a shared goal. We are eagerly awaiting the day that it will be commercialized in hydrogen powered eco-friendly ships.”

Principal Researcher Pan-mook Lee Awarded KRISO Scientist Award for Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Research▶ KRISO Hall of Fame in recognition of contributions to development of KRISO▶ Leading development, commercialization and expansion of unmanned underwater vehicle technology□ Pan-mook Lee, Principal Researcher at the Ocean System Engineering Research Division of Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean engineering (hereinafter KRISO, President Booki, Kim) has been honored with the KRISO Scientist Award for his contributions over the years. □ The KRISO Scientist Award is an award given to researchers who have contributed significantly to the development of KRISO as well as science and technology with outstanding research achievements. □ Principal researcher Pan-mook Lee has been recognized with the KRISO Scientist Award for his work on unmanned underwater vehicle technology, driving technological developments through research, and expanding the application of the technology through intellectual property rights management and commercialization. □ Principal researcher Pan-mook Lee joined KRISO in 1985 and has been leading developments in the field of unmanned underwater vehicles and underwater robots in Korea over the past 37 years. He developed core technologies such as the ▲ deep sea remotely controlled unmanned underwater vehicle (HEMIRE), ▲ autonomous unmanned underwater vehicle (IsiMI), ▲ auto-navigating mine disposal vehicle, and ▲ underwater walking robot (Crabster). □ In 2016, Lee participated in the exploration of hydrothermal vents in Southern Mariana Arc submarine volcanoes using the deep sea unmanned underwater vehicle HEMIRE and published a paper on the findings. He also filed a patent for a complex deep sea unmanned underwater vehicle system. He also transferred shallow sea autonomous underwater vehicle technology to Hanhwa Systems in 2010, and auto-navigating mine disposal vehicle technology to Daeyang Electric. Co., Ltd. in 2021, contributing to the commercialization of technological developments. □ Additionally, his deep sea unmanned underwater vehicle and autonomous underwater vehicle made the list of 100 Outstanding National Research and Development Projects in 2007 and 2010, and 10 Best Follow-Up Cases of Outstanding Research Projects in 2021. He also played a leading role in establishing marine accident response policies using marine exploration equipment technology and supported accident site surveys with unmanned underwater vehicles in response to major marine accidents. □ Thus, Principal Researcher Pan-mook Lee has made significant contributions to the development of deep sea ocean science and technology as well as KRISO, addressing the needs of the nation in his work as a scientist. □ Principal Researcher Pan-mook Lee responded with humility upon receiving the KRISO Scientist Award at the 2022 KRISO Kick-off Ceremony, saying “I would like to pass this honor to my fellow researchers who have always worked together to overcome unexpected challenges in the process of developing underwater robots.”

KRISO Drives Eco-Friendly Ship Development With Ammonia Fuel Supply▶ AiP awarded for ammonia fuel supply system in ammonia carriers□ Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean engineering (hereinafter KRISO, President Booki, Kim) announced on the 6th that its ammonia fuel supply system for 84K(84,000CBM) ammonia carriers was awarded an AiP from Lloyd’s Register (hereinafter LR*). * LR(Lloyd’s Register): UK-based register of shipping which establishes standards for ship engineering and safety, and conducts surveys of vessel construction and management □ This is the second AiP awarded to Korean technology for an ammonia fuel supply system, and highly meaningful in that it was developed with a detailed piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) reflecting operation and control concepts, and a complete Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP*). * HAZOP(Hazard and Operability Study): Comprehensive safety review including a review of details such as piping and instrumentation diagrams as well as overall equipment safety. □ The ammonia fuel supply system supplies fuel (ammonia) from the ammonia storage tank to the ammonia engine, raising pressure to the level required by the engine while keeping temperature within the permissible range. □ In response to IMO environmental regulations, the global shipbuilding industry has been working develop carbon-free fuel propulsion systems for ships. Unlike fuels conventionally used in ship propulsion systems such as diesel and bunker C oil, ammonia does not produce carbon emissions, and is a promising candidate fuel for eco-friendly ships of the future. □ Major shipbuilders such as CSSC, China’s largest shipbuilding group, and Japan’s NSY are currently developing ammonia fueled ships, and the top three Korean shipbuilders have also announced their development of ammonia-fueled oil tankers and container ships. □ The AiP for the ammonia fuel supply system is expected to not only contribute to the expansion of ammonia fueled ships, but also the advancement of KRISO’s green hydrogen research*. * Green hydrogen: Hydrogen produced through electrolysis of water using renewable energy such as solar or wind power. □ KRISO is exploring various supply chains to transport green hydrogen generated in offshore facilities to land, and one method involves converting green hydrogen to ammonia (green ammonia) for easier transportation. □ Green hydrogen converted to ammonia is easier to store and transport than hydrogen in pressurized or liquid forms. Furthermore, the transportation of green ammonia using the newly developed ammonia fuel supply system would be carbon-free. □ President Booki Kim of KRISO commented, “the development of the ammonia fuel supply system is an achievement signalling the arrival of carbon-free fuel for ships,”adding, “we hope for the expanded use of eco-friendly ships using carbon-free energy sources to become reality as soon as possible.”

KRISO and KR Sign MOU on Eco-Friendly Ship Technology Development▶ Improving global competitiveness of Korean maritime industries by promoting eco-friendly technologies□ Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean engineering (hereinafter KRISO, President Booki, Kim) announced the signing of an MOU for the development and commercialization of eco-friendly ship technology with the Korean Register (hereinafter KR, Chairman Hyung-chul Lee) on the 5th at the KR headquarters in Gangseo-gu, Busan. □ This MOU was formed to provide practical and unique technolgy services catering to industrial needs by bringing together the respective strengths and expertise of the two organizations. □ Under the MOU, the two organizations will cooperate in the △ survey and discovery of technological needs in eco-friendly ships and ocean engineering, △ joint establishment of long-term technological roadmap eco-friendly ships and ocean engineering △ joint development and distribution of core technologies required by the maritime industry, △ joint participation/response to global projects for greenhouse gas reduction in shipping △ joint participation and technolgical support for national R&D projects. □ Synergy is expected between KRISO’s development of source technologies and applied technologies through national R&D projects, and KR’s accreditation and establishment of standards for such technologies.□ Chairman Hyung-chul Lee of KR explained,“the development and commercialization of eco-friendly ship technolgies is a crucial priority for our clients and the maritime industry with the strengthening of international environmental regulations,” adding, “KR promises its full support and technological expertise in this partnership with KRISO to achieve greater progress in eco-friendly technologies.”□ President Booki Kim of KRISO remarked,“KRISO will be able to further apply its R&D capabilities in eco-friendly ship technologies through cooperation with KR, with expertise in technology commercialization,”further promising, “this synergy will contribute to the expansion of Korea’s presence in the global eco-friendly ship industry.”

Ship Mounted Damage Control System Selected as New Marine Technology▶ KRISO developed ship mounted system for decision making support in case of fire and damage▶ Received New marine technology certification in 2021, expected to greatly improve marine safety  □ The Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean engineering (President Booki Kim, hereinafter KRISO) has developed Korea’s first damage control system to enhance maritime safety. □ The government’s new marine technology certification system under the Marine Science and Technology Promotion Act accredits newly developed technologies or innovative improvements to existing technologies selected through a comprehensive review of its technological advancement and practical applicability. □ The ship mounted damage control system that received new marine technology certification is Korea’s first technology of its kind; it assesses and predicts ship accident situations and impact in real time, to support decision making for effective response implementation. The system was jointly developed by KRISO, Scanjet Group and LEEYOUNG SND. □ As immediate external support is not usually not possible in marine accidents, initial response at the scene of the accident is the crucial factor in determining the outcome. □ The ship mounted damage control system works on an integrated console within the ship which immediately obtains accident information, locates crew members, and assesses the operability of key equipment such as the engine and generator when an accident occurs. □ In particular, the system uses data from sensors in the ship to rapidly obtain accident information such as damage location, flooding impact, or diffusion routes of smoke and toxic gases in case of fire, to share information in real time with land-based systems. □ Furthermore, it uses a simulation database of thousands of pre-defined accident situations to provide damage response guidance in the form of human conversation in the case of fire or flooding, and has shortcut keys for accident responses, which enables fast and effective response to minimize damage in urgent situations. □ While damage control systems (DCS) developed by foreign companies are already in use, the KRISO developed damage control system uses shortcut keys reflecting the KS Korean Accident Notation Symbols, making a more intuitive and accessible interface for Korean crew. □ Moreover, damage control systems purchased from foreign companies cost over 2 Bil. KRW per ship. With the introduction of the domestically manufactured system, ship operators will enjoy lower costs on top of accelerated accident response, which will minimize the human, environmental and financial toll of ship accidents. □ KRISO President Booki Kim commented,“it is an honor for KRISO to receive new marine technology certification for marine safety technologies two years in a row,”adding,“we will roll up our sleeves, doing our utmost in research to make the seas safer for all.” □ KRISO had earlier received new marine technology certification for its ship sinking prevention/delay technology using 3 dimensional spatial information (ship bouyancy assistance system) in 2020, which can be integrated with the ship mounted damage control system.
