KRISO successfully held 2020 Future Ship Idea Contest- President Booki Kim said, "I hope this contest helps attract more attention to maritime engineering as a science and culture event." -□ The Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO led by President Booki Kim) successfully held the 2020 KRISO Future Ship Idea Contest, which ended with the main competition and award ceremony on December 9th.□ The 2020 KRISO Future Ship Idea Contest was sponsored by Daejeon Metropolitan City and the Society of Naval Architects of Korea. Idea submission started on October 8th, followed by the preliminary review on November 14th, and the main competition on December 9th.□ KRISO initiated this contest to attract more attention and interest to ship and maritime engineering and further nurture talent with creativity and combined expertise. Under the theme of "Future Ships We Dream of," 33 ideas and 26 ideas were submitted from the elementary school student division and the middle and high school student division, respectively.□ After the preliminary review, 20 ideas were selected and presented at the main competition. The Grand Prize, First-place Prize, Second-place Prize, and Creativity Prize* were granted by evaluating their creativity, logic, practicality, and presentation skills.* Grand Prize (1), First-place Prize (1), Second-place Prize (2), and Creativity Prize (1) / Separately awarded for the elementary school student division and the middle and high school student division□ The award ceremony of the 2020 KRISO Future Ship Idea Contest was originally planned to be an offline event, but upon implementation of Social Distance Level 2, it was inevitably held online.□ Instead of giving a face-to-face presentation, participants presented their ideas using video clips for review. The Grand Prize for the elementary school student division was given to the "Ship Station That Collects Waste," and the Grand Prize for the middle and high school student division went to the "Stingray." The "Ship Station That Collects Waste" submitted in the elementary school student division was viewed as suggesting a new model for future eco-friendly ships based on a brilliant idea of a ship station capable of collecting waste using its exhaust hood.□ The "Stingray," submitted in the middle and high school student division, was a research vessel that resembles a stingray, a deep-sea creature. This idea was highly evaluated for attempting to apply biomimicry design, which is recently widely used in various applications, to create a future ship that best suits the marine environment. The Grand Prize ideas will be reproduced as figures, and they will also be awarded to the winners later.□ Besides these ideas, many different creative ideas about future ships received prizes: an underwater cargo-passenger ship, a hybrid ship that combines the features of a yacht with a submarine, and a ship equipped with a shipbuilding yard, just to name a few.□ Booki Kim, the President of KRISO, said, "I am regretful that I couldn't meet our creative and passionate students face to face due to COVID-19, but I am hopeful that this contest was a great opportunity for all our students nationwide to enhance their creative thinking skills and become more interested in maritime engineering. I look forward to seeing more students participating and competing with their brilliant ideas next year so that this event can continue year after year as a renowned science and culture event that represents KRISO."
